About Us

The Susie Royer Syke Literacy Fellowship (SRSLF) was established in November 2005 to honor the memory of a talented and dedicated teacher and mentor. Susie valued opportunities to extend and enhance her learning through teaching and sharing with others. To that end, the SRSLF was established in her memory to help educators advance their understandings of best practices and their effectiveness as teachers. Our purpose is to fund small grants for literacy educators in the form of workshops, classes, conferences, course work, etc.

Since the inception of the Fellowship in November, 2005, over 150 grants have been awarded to deserving teachers.

The Board of Directors is comprised of educators, family and friends of Susie.

On April 10,2010, SRSLF will sponsor a workshop with

Ellin Oliver Keene.

Ellin is an author, classroom teacher, staff developer and adjunct professor of reading and writing.  For 16 years she directed staff development initiatives at the Denver-based Public Education & Business Coalition.

She will be addressing questions on the nature of students' understanding of what they read and what it means to teach comprehension. She will share examples of her work in some of the lowest income schools in the country.
