Welcome

The Susie Royer Syke Literacy Fellowship was established to honor the memory of a phenomenal teacher and mentor, Susie Royer Syke, and to provide scholarships to certified teachers who wish to access workshops, course work and learning opportunities to advance their understandings of best practices and their effectiveness as teachers. Our mission is to fund small grants for literacy educators in the form of workshops, classes, conferences, course work, etc.

Susie Royer Syke, a distinguished educator in Douglas County, Colorado, was killed in a tragic accident in December 2004. Susie helped design and implement reading training, obtained her Critical Friend’s coach certificate, developed and taught writing classes for school district personnel and participated in the Colorado Writing Project. She continually went above and beyond her job description because she valued the opportunities to extend and enhance her learning through teaching and sharing with others.

More than an exceptional educator, Susie was a compassionate and caring person. In this way she impacted students, parents and co-workers as she taught more than reading and writing skills but demonstrated empathy, support and kindness.

Susie had a gift for inspiring students of all ages to do and be their best. That is her legacy.
